Sleep deprivation is common nowadays, given the active lifestyle that we are required to have in order to survive financially. In August, 2013, Bank of America Merrill Lynch faced a controversy after the death of one of its interns - Moritz Erhardt. He was found unconscious and an ambulance was called. He was dead at the scene.
Later on, another intern revealed that Moritz has been working 8 nights for two weeks and that it was probably “too much for him in the end”.
Below are the 5 facts about sleep deprivation.
- Driving after staying up all night can be really dangerous. However, the longest time a person was recorded awake totaled to 11 days. This record was set in 1965 for a science project by a 17-year old high school boy named Randy Gardner.
- The standard hours of sleep is 8 hours. However, studies revealed that adults getting 6-7 hours of sleep have longer life.
- There are people who suffer from fear of sleep, also known as Somniphobia. Sufferers are afraid to sleep whenever they encounter triggering events that would cause them to have nightmares.
- We can not dream of faces we have not seen before. Notice that sometimes, other people in your dream have no faces. Also, when we talk to someone in our dreams, we actually talk to our self.
- The standard time for individuals to fall asleep is ten minutes. If you fall asleep right away, less than 5 minutes, that's a sign that you are sleep deprived.
Can sleep deprivation cause death?
Not exactly. A Chinese man died after 11 days of sleepless nights but sleep deprivation is not the only cause of his death. He was reportedly smoking and consuming alcohol throughout his sleepless marathon. The cigarettes and alcohol must have contributed to his death. Until now, scientists can't still prove the limit of our body in tolerating sleep deprivation.
