Running for Weight Loss - Is it worth it?

Some people would say that running doesn’t help with weight loss. That may be true, but with a very good reason and explanation.

So far, running is still the best cardio for weight loss. However, because running once or twice a week is not enough to lose weight, one must understand that they must lose more calories than they consume in order for running to be beneficial. It is therefore important to learn the correct running regimen for weight loss. Below, I have highlighted some of the most useful running tips that you can easily follow and add to your weight loss running plan.

1. Eat Healthy

Maintaining a healthy body is 30% exercise and 70% healthy diet, so you must start there. Basically, you have to eat healthy and lose about 3500 calories per day both through daily normal activities and exercise. The food pyramid can be helpful at this point.

If you’re really serious about losing weight, consider keeping a food journal for a few weeks. List down everything you have eaten so you can easily see where you can improve your diet.

2. Stick to a Running Schedule

Keeping a regular schedule will not only motivate you to get out there and run, but will also help your body adjust to your daily routine. If you can’t stick to a schedule, at least set a goal. For example, try to run at least 3-4 times a week.

3. Incorporate Speed Work

Speed work means running at a very fast speed in a short amount of time. You can add this to your running routine in between normal running to add thrill to your workout. This not only increases your muscle mass, it can also increase your metabolism, and thus help you lose more calories throughout the day.

4. Don’t Skip Meals

Contrary to what others believe, skipping meals does not help you lose weight. It will only make your metabolism slow, and make you crave. As a result, your body will take longer time to burn what you consume on your next meal. Skipping meals will also make you feel weak - not very helpful when you want to keep running. Consume calories before and after workout, also when necessary, during workout.

If you still think that it is hard to stick to running as a workout, think about this: running is one of the most effective ways to lose calories, especially because your metabolism is still elevated even after you run. It is also time-efficient and convenient. When walking the same distance, running burns more calories. And best of all, running has the same effect as getting high. When running, a chemical called endocannabinoids is released by the brain, causing one to feel a sense of euphoria.
