This year looks like a transition from the old travel system to a whole new tech-savvy hospitality industry. Since the birth of smartphones, every business there is started to target their prospect client through mobile apps. Opal is just one of the many releases that makes hassle-free mobile flight booking possible.
After the announcement of the Apple Watch, Robot receptionists, and Instagram booking, OneTravel then released Opal - a travel agent that can be kept in the pocket. This technology is designed to make flight booking easier and more convenient for travelers.
To use this app, a user must have a OneTravel Android app installed to their smartphones. It works by searching over 450 airlines simply by talking to the device’s built-in microphone.
For example a user may trigger Opal by saying this:
“I need to book a flight from Austin to Los Angeles on Friday.”
If there are missing information for Opal to make the search, such as destination, returns and number of travelers, it will ask follow-up questions. The user can narrow down searches or change information even if Opal is doing the search, simply by speaking to it.
Opal also has a travel-specific vocabulary to make conversation more comfortable for the user. For example, the user can say D.C. and Opal will instantly understand the word. Not only that, this travel agent can also find deals for its customer.
In the future, we can expect that Opal will also be helpful in booking hotel rooms.
