Make Money Online Captioning Videos on Rev

Rev.com is a website that lets freelancers make extra money by captioning videos. The job requires freelancers to transcribe what is being said, and then sync it to the video.

Applying on Rev.Com

Rev has 3-step application process.

Step 1. Grammar Test and Initial Captioning Test

The first one requires you to answer a set of multiple choice question that measures your ability to construct a grammatically correct sentence. The questions are basic and you can complete this in 10 minutes.

When you are done, you will be given links to guides for using Quill as well as a style guide that you can review in order to caption videos correctly and efficiently.

*Note: Quill is a third party website that Rev uses to easily caption videos.

When you are ready, you can proceed to the first video test. The first video is a one-minute narration of an animated presentation. It is quite easy and takes 30 minute for a beginner to complete. (You can stop and save your progress anytime but all Rev tests have due dates.)

After submitting your work, you will have to wait for a few days to hear from Rev. As for me, I heard back from them after 10 days after submitting my caption for the first video. They then send me an e-mail invitation to complete the second test.

Step 2. Second Video Clip

You will have to caption a second video clip of a talk show. This is a multiple-speaker video so you have to review the Speaker Labeling on the Style Guide so you would have less mistakes. I completed this 2-minute video in an hour. After that, I was presented with another video where Scott discusses how to correctly caption the second video.

Another video that shows how to efficiently caption is also presented. This helps a lot for beginners because the speaker, Karleen, shows how quickly she captions videos. Her tips can save you a lot of time.

Step 3. Third Video Clip

The third video test is immediately given after submitting the second video captioning test. I find it tough to finish this test because although the video is of high quality (it is a promotional video for a company that stopped their services few years ago), it was shot in the factory and there are a lot of background noises so I can hardly understand what the guy is saying. Plus, there are words that you have to Google as well, in order to be accurate on your captioning.

After these tests, Rev.com recruiter will review the two videos and will e-mail you again to let you know if you are accepted to the program. I read from another blog that Rev does not e-mail to applicants who are rejected, but I am not 100 percent sure about this.

My Opinion

I haven’t had the chance to finish the third test because as I have said earlier, it’s too tough for me, and I couldn’t find any clue online since the company has already stopped operating.

From the tests I have done, I can say that captioning is fun (you can also caption movies on Rev!), plus, their guidelines are quite simple. This is the type of task that you can get used to and will eventually become really easy as time pass.
