The Cost of Social Shaming - 13-year Old Girl Commits Suicide After Her Father Uploaded Her Punishment on Youtube

Social shaming is common nowadays. Some parents even think that this is a very effective way of punishing their children. Apparently, they are wrong.

On May 29, 2015, Izabel Laxamana, a 13-year old middle school student jumped out of a moving vehicle and then jumped off of “the South 48th Street bridge over Interstate 5”.

She was rushed to the hospital that afternoon, but died the next day.

The news quickly spread and people started blaming Izabel’s father for posting a public shaming video on Youtube a few days before the incident. Many believe that her father’s action led her to end her life.

The public shaming video was soon taken down, but a friend of “Izzy” re-uploaded it.

The 15-second clip shows Izabel nervously facing the camera, and a pile of her hair lying on the floor. This actual video was taken after her father broke her guitar, and took her to the garage to cut her hair. After uploading it to Youtube Izabel’s father forced her to wear boy’s clothing, went to the school principal and told him not to allow his daughter to be a candidate in becoming a student council president.

It is believed that Izabela is also bullied at school, which may have contributed to her grief. A screenshot of her Google page shows that she has long been feeling “alone”.
