Physicians
Not all doctors make good money. On a survey performed by WebMD we can see that doctors make decent earnings per year depending on their specialty, Orthopedics making the most at $413,000 per year, and doctors specializing in HIV/ID making the least at $174,000 per year.
Most doctors who just graduated from medical school also have to pay their loans and would possibly be earning a good amount in their forties.
Earnings also vary per region. Whether a doctor says he loves his job depends on the tasks he has to face on a daily basis. For example, 70% of family doctors who are making $176,000 per year commented that if they would have to choose their career again, they would still choose medicine.
Veterinarians
Like physicians, veterinarians have the same stigma of making huge money for taking care of animals. Both vets and physicians are on-call 24/7 and think that they are earning less than they expected. Hospital partners make more though.
However, most of these people are so passionate about their job, so their earnings don’t really matter.
Lawyers
This depends on how smart you are at building your profile as a lawyer. What lawyers make depend on how many clients they have.
Most young lawyers make around $40,000 - $65,000 per year. NALP.org reported that this career has a mean salary of $82,292 per year, but not everyone can easily get the mean salary.
Pilots
Most people assume that pilots have the best paying jobsPilots work regular hours like most of us. They would “be at work” for 8-12 hours everyday, but their hourly compensation is different. They are only paid for the hours they are on flight. That means, they may be “at work” for 12 hours per day but will only be paid for the 6-hour flight.
New pilots can make $20-$40 / hour and health benefits on top of that. Major Airlines pay about $50,000 per year for an entry level. It is true that a pilot can earn $200,000 per year. But that comes rarely, and only if you already have a lot of experience.
Chemists and Biologists
Most people think that becoming a scientist pays well because of how hard you have study in college, and most importantly, because of the studies they have to perform for future innovation. If you are a fresh graduate chemist, you will have to invest for your own lab and hope to make money out of it.
Management positions seem to change this, though, as you can make more. But again, that’s after lots of experiences.
If you are still in college and taking one of these majors, don't feel discouraged. People succeed in these fields because of their love for what they do. In the end, it's not how much money you make, but how much you help the society.
Nice of you to share the sobering facts that are often overlooked by those seeking careers
ReplyDeleteThanks Roy!
ReplyDeleteInteresting. Indeed this post is a need of the hour. We should really follow our heart. Blindly taking up jobs for money isn't right!
ReplyDeleteThe truth and reality about profession but things will turn out differently when luck engulfs people zodiac signs. Well, as the saying goes, destiny will prevail but work your way up to success.
ReplyDeleteI think your profession will just help you define your position, but not the ability and your capability. You can gain more if you know the job well.
ReplyDeleteWell, in reality, if you are lazy you cannot get the best paying jobs, no matter what you do. So whatever jobs you have, do better and be good!
I think considering the investment in studying law and being a doctor, their mean pay is very low. However, if they work hard, they can really do more.
ReplyDeleteThis post is really true. I know so many doctors and lawyers who do not earn a lot. Actually it takes so years to build a name and reputation and that is only when these professionals will be known and get to earn money they deserve.
ReplyDeleteThese people also work hard for the job, so it's just reasonable that they are paid well. A lot of us think that they don't really do anything at all, when they also have a lot at stake. It's heartbreaking to know that some of them are not paid the way they should be.
ReplyDeleteJust goes to show that your heart has to be in it!
ReplyDeleteQuite an eyeopener! I was thinking pilots get awesome salaries.
ReplyDeleteWow!I DEFINITELY did not know those salaries. I really thought differently! That just goes to show you should not be picking a career based off money but based off of your passion for the job.
ReplyDeleteWhat is the education required to become a pilot? I know there'd be a flight school, but is college required, too? $50,000 really isn't a bad entry-level salary unless people acquire quite a bit of debt on their way to becoming a pilot.
ReplyDeleteAnd even if they do make money they have to pay off all of their debt first! haha hence why you go into these professions to change the world and do what you love rather than become rich and famous.
ReplyDeleteWow, I didn't know that pilots are paid that low! It's really different from what I know. The stress level of a lawyer and pilot are really high~ so I don't think it justify!
ReplyDeleteWe can earn if we are passionate towards our work. Dedication and experience can boost up the earnings.
ReplyDeleteThat's so sad. I thought that they really get that kind of earning. Well, reality sometimes can be a little tricky.
ReplyDeleteIt is good that you pointed that out. That is why it is best to lean more towards one's passion in life instead of settling for a "good-paying job or profession." In the end, it is really doing what we love, more than the fat paycheck, that will give us most satisfaction.
ReplyDeleteNow only i know some job looks glamour and like they get paid a lot but actually not really. There are a lot of hard work and long hours of work involved.
